Yesterday, Alex Hirsch announced
the conclusion of the Disney show Gravity Falls, to the astonishment of its
strong fanbase. The show has been a
popular fixture on Disney’s XD channel for the past year and a half, and the
program will conclude with its second season and the last two episodes that
will tie up the Weirdmageddon cliffhanger.
Just what’s made Gravity Falls so
popular? There’s a handful of factors
operating here, most of them gloriously unique – and they come together to make
one heck of a show.
1 involving Mytharc: Oh, does this show
have a mytharc. Spooky book created by
an unknown person? Mythological
creatures out the wazoo? An overarching
plot about an all-powerful, evil, pyramid-shaped creature? Gravity Falls has all of that in spades.
2 Smart Kids, Who Treat The Kids In the Audience Like they’re
smart enough to get it:. And not in a
sly, wink-wink aside to the adults kind of way: it’s at turns a serious
portrait about two kids learning how to grow up and face adult
responsibilities, and all of the heaviness that entails.
3 Fully rounded adult characters; on a kid’s show, Even: Stan and Stanford are just as interesting as Mabel and
Dipper, and the development of their sibling relationship and conflicts enchant
just as much as their younger counterparts do.
4 Complex lessons For Kids That Aren't All About Hunting monsters: Dipper and
Mabel learn about honesty, how to make friends and not to judge books by their
cover alongside with incantations and dark family secrets.
5 Pop Culture References: All I have to do is type the words ‘Don’t Stop Unbelieving’ and the tune’ll pop
right into your head, won’t it?
